Barnacles - How fast can they grow ?

Barnacles grow faster than most boat owners expect, especially in warmer waters.

  • You can start seeing barnacles within 1–2 weeks

  • Noticeable growth in 3–4 weeks

  • Heavy fouling in 6–8 weeks (sometimes sooner in summer)

What’s actually happening.....

Barnacles don’t just “appear” overnight. They go through stages:

  1. Larvae attach (within days)

Free-swimming larvae are constantly in the water. When they find a surface, they stick almost immediately.

  2. Settlement and hardening (first 1–2 weeks)

They cement themselves to the hull and begin forming their shell.

  3. Rapid growth (weeks 2–6)

Once attached, they grow quickly, especially in warm, nutrient-rich water.

  4. Mature barnacles (6+ weeks)

At this point, they’re hard, sharp, and much more difficult to remove.

What affects how fast they grow

  • Water temperature – Warm water (like SE QLD summer) = very fast growth

  • Boat usage – Boats that sit still foul much quicker

  • Antifoul condition – Older or worn antifoul = faster attachment

  • Location – Marinas and nutrient-rich areas speed things up

In places like Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast:

  • A clean hull can start to lose performance within 3–4 weeks

  • Leave it 8–10 weeks in summer, and you can be dealing with serious buildup (even small barnacle clusters turning into a proper job)

That’s why regular cleaning cycles (6–8 weeks, sometimes tighter in summer) make a big difference. It keeps growth soft and manageable instead of turning into a grind.
